Learning Media Literacy

This is actually already innate to me, what I found and realised was just that it was OK to judge and criticize with every might who, why, how and what the message, reciever, source and channel of a certain medium can provide your brain. That’s the first thing I learned in media literacy.

Anyway its really impossible to sum up everything in this blog, but i’ll tell you what, if there was a quiz now, then i’d probably A the whole damn thing. So just off the top of my head. Here are the stuff I learned in this wonderful recap of my whole Program Course Bachelor in Broadcast Communication:

  1. I learned that the lessons, the factoids you remembered from Intro to Media and Comm, Media, Law and Ethics, Broadcast Program and Management aren’t just things so this output oriented course can produce final written papers which will make the course harder for studying.
  2. I learned that knowing all those jargons and learning new ones on what the status quo of not only Philippine Media but Global media, U.S. media— since our book gives American Examples.
  3. These jargans are Demassification, the Philippines before had a Demassified audience meaning it’s demassified/ reclassified or ‘subpart-ed’ into the following: Print, Television, Radio, Internet and New age Technologies (Digital) as well as film, magazines, books, etc. 
  4. Now there is a convergence or the fusion of media where a printing press of newspaper (philstar.com) can now be seen online or a television station can have a subsidiary of a radio station and a print media and a website all at the same time (gma:DZBB:BrgyLS:gmanetwork.inc)
  5. But the thing here is there is also an audience fragmentation, like in the Television, there are shows for class C below statutes or ‘masa shows’ like ABS-CBN, GMA etc. with programs that target specific demographics (gender/civil status/age/financial status/all of the above).
  6. There is also a sense of globalization, it means that people in the U.S. and here in the Philippines are facing almost the same environment (excluding cultural factors). Meaning to say McLuhan’s media without borders was actually granted and treated now as a fact.
  7. What I called a term before as just plainly “oligopoly” of certain businessmen who have a lot of subsidiaries (companies owned/sister companies/subowned companies) was actually called conglomeration. A great example is TV 5 owned by Manny Pangilinan among other things like Meralco(power company), St.Lukes(high end hospital), NLEX(highway) and a few sister stations: AKTV (a sports channel), AKSYON (a news channel). Why?
  8. My favorite discovery was the theory of economics of scale where things like the possibility that MVP will use TV5 to obviously make good of the Public Relations of his group of companies. Bravo dude.
  9. There is also the ages of technology/ Types of culture: Oral Culture (stone age where fables and legends are passed through stories verbally.
  10. Written/Literate Culture or the time of Shakespeare and the likes, Plato, etc. where writing was a form of media.
  11. Another culture sparked after William Guttenburg invented the Printing Press… and I thought this factoid was only important since it paved way to the making of computers.
  12. The computer thingy came after the industrial revolution… It was the age of TV and radio
  13. the digital age or the age of technology/ information is the age today… Internet, Ipad name it.
  14. My conspiracy theories also became fact since I hate GMA for being so deaf to their watchers/viewers and just yearn for money… money… money which they will still get since there is a need for airtime of advertised products, in the end these kinds of Broadcasting Management hierarchy is very unethical yet removes the audience as receivers and substitutes it with advertising companies.
  15. Theories, I got to apply the theories in Media Setting which made me happy, I still am grounded with the Technological Determinism as one of th emost translucent theories to effectively visualize the Philippines. Why not a modern rendition like the Model of Television’s Program Choice? well, simply because our media outlook hasn’t really changed much from before to now… Sad I Know.
  16. Books, I didn’t realize that there were so many banned books before which people can now easily buy and access through e-books and cheap second hand copies like how to kill a mocking bird, harry potter etc. Froim classics to modern ones due to the hints of racism (uncle tom’s cabin- this is actually funny because it ranks 3rd as the most bought book in the world throughout history), sex, wizardry or satanism or all things socially taboo.
  17. Magazines, It’s funny to see that Time Warner, a really really old version of Warner Bros. had survived for so long, It’s fun to watch and backtrack with the reporters the companies that first published something and which of which are still standing today.
  18. Newspapers, Print is a different story I was completely unaware of the type of newspapers there are since I’m not a journalism major, but heck I loved how we tackled that too, dailies, broadsheet, metropolitan dailies, tabloids, dissident news, etc. that was one good of a crash course actually. Didn’t know there were plenty and that some publish twice a month or at just once a month.
  19. Film, it was actually funny that films could actually spark from a horse race… That people would actually be going through the trouble of shooting cameras beside each other at a degree, which is actually a trend today, see America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion episode 1:)
  20. Radio… I didn’t really care what UHFs and VHFs stand for before, now i know its about frequency, that hertz isn’t just a word where you wonder why people care when engineering departments of broadcasting companies will be the one to be bothered by frequencies/technical stuffs like that.
  21. i also distinctly remember the power of having a broadcasting frequency higher that what is allowed so as your station appears to have a louder volume, done by AM stations since it will not affect their broadcast because they are only broadcasting through amplitudes.
  22. Popular Music, although i can’t remember the top20 all i can say is, it was mainly music from the 70’s or 60’s or 80’s which is sad that no one has broken in from the millennium
  23. Television, aside from UHFs and VHFs affecting the sound and picture of the television, what I am fond of television is hte fact that it played a major role and was sold after the world war 2. I mean imagine if people weren’t so stressed and depressed and they didn’t care about picture tubes or moving images that only display 30 second things about clowns! clowns! what would the world come to be when computer is still a video screen…
  24. Cable, I din’t know that there was such a thing as cable historyxD that it was done in order to ‘fine tune’ or just have better television views… that it was called a Master Antenna Television when a governor mandated cable and before that it was CATV or cable antenna Television of which some tv seller just wanted to have better sales. Imagine where the world would be without that person… I cant.
  25. That Americans still use VHS or that we as filipinos still don’t have Tivo or Replay TV and that Manny Pangilinan’s Cignal is the first Satellite TV in the Philippines bringing High Definition pictures of NBA and BTV into your homes while the U.S. have mandated that all tv sets be HD… unfair:(
  26. video games.. that arcades or pingpong is one of the most original ‘pasimuno’ of the great media. 
  27. that tv sets now have videogames on them in the U.S. and due to convergence, it can be played via internet or the computer or a handheld device or playstations.
  28. Lastly that it is a win-win situation for video games to have advertisements since it makes the game feel more real and that advertisers profit from that.
  29. The internet is a whole wide world which is tagged or woven into connected things like e-mail, online gaming, blogging, social networks, informative sites, instructional videos, etc.

  36. Global Media refreshed me with terms on oligopoly, ownership and the huge power of satellites for it to function well

UK: More like a riot to you lot (referring to the Philippines).

Philippine translation: Nako, may pag-asa ba kami sa mga ‘yan. Parang wala naman.

U.S. : Why am I dragged into this mess again? Oh brits say hi to that new princess of yours for me. Oh Pinoys? What’s with PNOY? Huh? I’m confused… Anyway Mahal kow kayow… God Bless America and no place else.

At least their all being swirled by the wind and Philippines isn’t a fourth world country. And that’s just the comparison of flags and worldisms, you know… third world… First world, etc.

The main purpose of this is to wake-up call everybody in the Philippine business to backtrack and think of who we really are as Filipinos, like what the brooding self-absorbed Brits do every now and then and produce entertainment from that because then, maybe the status quo of being Philippines adoring Americans will be broken and they will adore us instead.

After all, media is culture of the society’s soul.

Before anything else a brief background of stats between two countries:

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It has a long history as a major player in international affairs and fulfils an important role in the EU, UN and Nato.
The twentieth century saw Britain having to redefine its place in the world. At the beginning of the century it commanded a world-wide empire as the foremost global power.
Two world wars and the end of empire diminished its role, but the UK remains a major economic and military power, with considerable political and cultural influence around the world.
Britain was the world’s first industrialised country. Its economy remains one of the largest, but it has for many years been based on service industries rather than on manufacturing.
Despite being a major member of the EU, the country is not part of the eurozone. The prospect of its joining receded still further after the UK blocked proposed changes to the EU’s Lisbon Treaty aimed at addressing the crisis in the eurozone, which by the autumn of 2011 had reached an acute phase.
In recent years the UK has taken steps to devolve powers to Scotland and Wales. The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff opened in 1999, and the possibility of devolution for the English regions has also been discussed.

Philippines officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas) is a sovereign country in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies between the country and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural resources and made it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands, the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila.
With an estimated population of about 94 million people, the Philippines is the world’s 12th most populous country. An additional 11 million Filipinos live overseas. Multiple ethnicities and cultures are found throughout the islands. In prehistoric times, Negritos were some of the archipelago’s earliest inhabitants. They were followed by successive waves of Austronesian peoples who brought with them influences from Malay, Hindu, and Islamic societies. Trade introduced Chinese cultural influences which remain to this day.

MEDIA PROPER

The UK has a strong tradition of public-service broadcasting and an international reputation for creative programme-making.

The fledgling BBC began daily radio broadcasts in 1922 and quickly came to play a pivotal role in national life. The Empire Service - the forerunner of the BBC World Service - established a reputation worldwide. The BBC is funded by a licence fee, which all households with a TV set must pay.
Philippine media uses mainly Filipino and English. Other Philippine languages, including various Visayan languages are also used, especially in radio due to its ability to reach remote rural locations that might otherwise not be serviced by other kinds of media. The dominant television networks ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5 also have extensive radio presence.
The entertainment industry is vibrant and feeds broadsheets and tabloids with an unending supply of details about celebrities and sensationalist scandals du jour. Drama and fantasy shows are anticipated as are Latin telenovelas, Asianovelas, and anime. Daytime television is dominated by game shows, variety shows, and talk shows such as Eat Bulaga, Showtime, and Happy, Yipee, Yehey.
Philippine cinema has a long history and is popular domestically, but has faced increasing competition from American, Asian and European films. Critically acclaimed directors and actors include Lino Brocka and Nora Aunor for films like Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (Manila: In the Claws of Light) and Himala (Miracle). In recent years it has become common to see celebrities flitting between television and movies and then moving into politics provoking concerns.
VERDICT: Over-all, U.K. has prioritized news as their dominant programming style while Philippines, in the idolization of U.S., adapted a programming with almost all programs are for entertainment. Especially variety shows.

The BBC Story
Commercial TV began in 1955 with the launch of ITV. Commercial radio was introduced in the 1970s, although ship-based pirate radio stations flourished in the 1960s before being outlawed. Hundreds of privately-owned radio and TV stations now compete with the BBC for listeners and viewers.
Home-grown soap operas have long topped the TV ratings, and British viewers keenly follow the ups and downs of life in east London’s Albert Square, the setting for the BBC’s EastEnders, and Coronation Street - ITV’s soap about northern-English working-class life. Programmes which catapult ordinary people into the public eye - known as reality TV - are enjoying a wave of popularity.
In a rapidly-changing digital world, British media providers are looking at new ways of reaching audiences via computers and personal multimedia devices.
Once-dominant terrestrial TV networks face strong competition from digital satellite and cable, which offer hundreds of channels, and digital terrestrial TV (DTT), which carries a smaller number of mainly free-to-air channels. Britain’s media regulator, Ofcom, hopes to turn off the analogue TV signal by 2012. Terrestrial digital radio (DAB) has had a slower start.
The media are free and able to report on all aspects of British life. The variety of publications reflects the full spectrum of political opinion. In recent years, newspaper circulations have been sliding while online readership has surged. In 2010, News Corporation, owner of The Times, began charging readers for access to the online content of some of its UK titles.
There were nearly 51.5 million internet users in the UK by June 2010 - more than 80% of the population (Internetworldstats). Research by Google in 2010 found that the internet accounts for 7.2% of the UK’s gross domestic product (GDP). The study said Britain is the world’s leading country for e-commerce.
By 2009, some 44% of UK internet users had a profile on at least one social network. The BBC is Britain’s most popular online news destination.
The Filipino Channel (abbreviated as TFC) is a Filipino cable television network owned by the Philippine media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation. The network is targeted towards overseas Filipinos and their families. The network airs a 24 hour lineup of shows from ABS-CBN, and is also backed by several other international direct-to-home services like Filipino On Demand and TFC Now. Today it has over two million subscribers worldwide.

VEDICT:  IT IS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT THERE IS A HUGE CONTRAST AND LACK OF SIMILARITY OVER THEIR FIRST INTERNATIONAL SYNDICATED CHANNELS. UK:BBC; PHILIPPINES:TFC. 

You can’t judge a winner over these things since they don’t really stand at par with each other. Don’t they.


So what are the alternates of Philippine News Channels to BBC?
The Philippines is too damned fragmented to make up one news station since they are mostly dominated by privately owned companies.
Where as the UK stands still and prioritizes information over entertainment. Maybe that’s why they mostly need shrinks and have brooding moments but why not, they’re all mostly intelligible people.

VHF STATIONS 

Very high frequency (VHF) is the radio frequency range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. Frequencies immediately below VHF are denoted High frequency (HF), and the next higher frequencies are known as Ultra high frequency (UHF). The frequency allocation is done by ITU.

These names referring to high-end frequency usage originate from mid-20th century, when regular radio service used MF, Medium Frequencies, better known as “AM” in USA, below the HF. Currently VHF is at the low-end of practical frequency usage, new systems tending to use frequencies in SHF and EHF above the UHF range. See Radio spectrum for full picture.
Common uses for VHF are FM radio broadcast, television broadcast, land mobile stations (emergency, business, private use and military), long range data communication with radio modems, amateur radio, marine communications, air traffic control communications and air navigation systems (e.g. VOR, DME & ILS).

UHF STATIONS

Ultra-high frequency (UHF) designates the ITU radio frequency range of electromagnetic waves between 300 MHz and 3 GHz (3,000 MHz), also known as the decimetre band or decimetre wave as the wavelengths range from one to ten decimetres (10 cm to 1 metre). Radio waves with frequencies above the UHF band fall into the SHF (super-high frequency) and EHF (extremely high frequency) bands, all of which fall into the microwave frequency range. The United Kingdom has had a major influence on modern cinema. The first moving pictures developed on celluloid film were made in Hyde Park, London in 1889 by William Friese Greene, a British inventor, who patented the process in 1890. It is generally regarded that the British film industry enjoyed a ‘golden age’ in the 1940s, led by the studios of J. Arthur Rank and Alexander Korda.
The British directors Alfred Hitchcock and David Lean are among the most critically acclaimed of all-time, with other important directors including Charlie Chaplin, Michael Powell,Carol Reed and Ridley Scott.Many British actors have achieved international fame and critical success, including Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, Michael Caine, Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery, Vivien Leigh,David Niven, Laurence Olivier,Peter Sellers and Kate Winslet. Some of the most commercially successful films of all time have been produced in the United Kingdom, including the two highest-grossing film franchises (Harry Potter and James Bond).
Ealing Studios has a claim to being the oldest continuously working film studio facility in the world.
Despite a history of important and successful productions, the industry has often been characterised by a debate about its identity and the level of American and European influence. Many British films are co-productions with American producers, often using both British and American actors, and British actors feature regularly in Hollywood films. Many successful Hollywood films have been based on British people, stories or events, including Titanic, The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean and the ‘English Cycle’ of Disney animated films.
In 2009 British films grossed around $2 billion worldwide and achieved a market share of around 7% globally and 17% in the United Kingdom. Cinema of the Philippines (Filipino:Pelikulang Pilipino or Sine Pilipino) started with the introduction of the first moving pictures to the country on January 1, 1897 at the Salón de Pertierra in Manila. The following year, local scenes were shot on film for the first time by a Spaniard, Antonio Ramos, using the Lumiere Cinematograph. Early filmmakers and producers in the country were mostly wealthy enterprising foreigners and expatriates, but on September 12, 1919, a silent feature film broke the grounds for Filipino filmmakers. Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden), a movie based on a popular musical play, was the first movie made and shown by Filipino filmmaker José Nepomuceno.
Dubbed as the “Father of Philippine Cinema”, his work marked the start of cinema as an art form in the Philippines.
Even with the problems currently facing motion pictures around the world, movies are still considered as one of the popular forms of entertainment among the Filipinos, directly employing some 260 000 Filipinos and generating around PHP 2000 million revenues annually.
The Philippines was the last country to establish a national film archive, when one opened in October 2011.
2011 was one of the most successful years in Philippine Cinema history as 3 of its films (all from Star Cinema) landed in the top 3 of the highest grossing Filipino Film of All-Time.
The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin grossed Php331.6Million in box office and currently the highest grossing local films in the Philippines.
No Other Woman grossed Php278.39Million while 2011 MMFF entry Enteng Ng Ina Mo, has a gross income of Php237.89Million (as of January 7, 2012)and considered as the highest grossing MMFF entry of all time,

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 300 million users as of 2011, generating over 300 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. It has been described as “the SMS of the Internet.”

Guidelines for Use of the Twitter 

Promoting your own Account

Do:
